No Christmas Event this year at Old Fort Concho

San Angelo, Texas – Because of COVID-19, the traditional Christmas event held every year has been cancelled. Created in December of 1982, Christmas at Old Fort Concho usually expects 15,000 guests from 150 Texas communities, 25 states and countries around the world.
“We were disappointed by cancelling the Christmas celebration,” said Fort Concho Historical Landmark Site Manager Robert Bluthardt. “We spent hours of study into this and spoke to our volunteers, vendors, entertainers, supporters, before we understood the Covid situation, before we made the decision to cancel the Christmas event.”
The Christmas festivity at Old Fort Concho is a huge event. It has hundreds of moving parts; it covers 42 acres of land and 26 buildings and thousands of people in close quarters even outside to watch several demonstrations.
“Half of the vendors said that they did not want to participate,” Bluthardt said. “Major of the musical groups also did not want to come. Neither those who we usually counted on; they were not available.”
Bluthardt said the event is considered a fundraising event. Under these conditions there were no chances to make money out of the event.
“There are too many risks, and no guarantees that the Covid situation would improve or having the chances to shut down the event one week or one month before the event,” Bluthardt said.
Established in 1867, Fort Concho served as regimental headquarters for some of the most famous frontier army units like the 4th and 10th Cavalry.
Fort Concho is now a historic preservation project and museum which is owned and operated by the City of San Angelo, Texas.

“Nos decepcionó la cancelación de la celebración navideña”, dijo Robert Bluthardt, gerente del sitio histórico Fort Concho. "Pasamos horas estudiando esto y hablamos con nuestros voluntarios, proveedores, animadores, seguidores, antes de comprender la situación de COVID, antes de tomar la decisión de cancelar el evento navideño".
La festividad de Navidad en Old Fort Concho es un gran evento. Tiene cientos de partes móviles; Cubre 42 acres de tierra y 26 edificios y miles de personas en lugares cerrados incluso afuera para ver varias manifestaciones.
“La mitad de los proveedores dijeron que no querían participar”, dijo Bluthardt. “El mayor de los grupos musicales tampoco quiso venir. Tampoco aquellos con los que habitualmente contamos; no estaban disponibles".
Bluthardt dijo que el evento se considera un evento de recaudación de fondos. En estas condiciones, no hubo posibilidades de ganar dinero con el evento.
“Hay demasiados riesgos y no hay garantías de que la situación de COVID mejore o de que haya posibilidades de cerrar el evento una semana o un mes antes del evento”, dijo Bluthardt.
Establecido en 1867, Fort Concho sirvió como cuartel general del regimiento para algunas de las unidades del ejército fronterizo más famosas, como el 4º y el 10º de Caballería.
Fort Concho es ahora un proyecto de preservación histórica y un museo que pertenece y es operado por la ciudad de San Angelo, Texas.
