Angel Flores, the new CEO of the YMCA and seated in the middle of some staff members, considers them like family. Flores began her duties as the CEO this past January 2021. The YMCA is located at 353 S. Randolph St.
SAN ANGELO – Angel Flores grew up being around the YMCA. Flores later started her career at the Y in a number of positions, from youth sports director to membership, and eventually as an associate executive director.
After 16-years of serving in many areas for the Y, Angel’s journey brought her full circle as she became the new CEO. The former CEO, AJ Moore upon his retirement, highly recommended her for the position which the board approved.
Flores, a 2006 Angelo State University graduate and the person in charge of 75 staff members, was asked what was the biggest challenge she faced in the early going?
“COVID-19 brought a lot of problems, that was the single most difficult thing.”
Angel admitted there were reservations about whether she was ready to step into the role of CEO. “I told myself that I couldn’t be afraid. Being the first female CEO at the YMCA, I thought I just couldn’t pass up that opportunity” she said.
Angel concluded the interview with the focus on the Y’s afterschool program and the reason for its success.
The program has a youthful staff, from age 18-21 whose purpose is to help the children find their own identity while also offering educational and physical activities.
“The program is a youth development initiative for school age children from kindergarten to fifth grade. The Afterschool Program is held at all of the SAISD elementary campuses. And at all three Concho Valley Council of Government head-start programs,” said Flores.

SAN ÁNGELO – Ángel Flores creció alrededor de la YMCA. Más tarde, Flores comenzó su carrera en la “Y” en varios puestos, desde directora de deportes juveniles hasta membresía, y finalmente como directora ejecutiva asociada.
Después de 16 años de servir en muchas áreas para la “Y”, el viaje de Ángel cerró el ciclo cuando se convirtió en la nueva directora ejecutiva. El ex director ejecutivo, AJ Moore, tras su jubilación, la recomendó encarecidamente para el puesto, lo cual fue aprobado por la mesa directiva.
A Flores, una graduada de la Angelo State University en 2006 y la persona a cargo de 75 miembros del personal, se le preguntó cuál fue el mayor desafío al que se enfrentó al principio.

Ángel admitió que había reservas sobre si estaba lista para asumir el papel de directora ejecutiva. “Me dije a mí misma que no podía tener miedo. Siendo la primera directora ejecutiva femenina en la YMCA, pensé que no podía dejar pasar esa oportunidad ”, dijo.
Ángel concluyó la entrevista con el enfoque en el programa extracurricular de la “Y” y la razón de su éxito.
El programa cuenta con un personal joven, de 18 a 21 años de edad, cuyo propósito es ayudar a los niños a encontrar su propia identidad y al mismo tiempo ofrecer actividades educativas y físicas.
“El programa es una iniciativa de desarrollo juvenil para niños en edad escolar desde el jardín de niños hasta el quinto grado. El programa después de clases se lleva a cabo en todos los campus de primaria de SAISD. Y en los tres programas iniciales del Concilio de Gobierno del Valle de Concho”, dijo Flores.
