District 3 City Councilperson Alexandra Falcón Calderón was elected to serve in the city council on Nov. 3. She has been involved with numerous associations and organizations in the past and is now focusing on serving the community as an elected official.

DEL RIO- A lifelong Del Rioan, a community advocate and someone who has been very involved with different aspects of the community, recently joined the Del Rio City Council.
Alexandra Falcón Calderón, a Del Rioan born and raised in San Felipe, was elected on Nov. 3 to serve as District 3 councilperson, and ever since she has been learning how to better serve her constituents and the Del Rio community as a whole.
As a small business owner working in downtown Del Rio, Calderón is also aware of the needs and possibilities of these areas of the economy.
“I have been very involved in the community with several organizations, in events,” she said.
Through the years Calderón has been playing key roles in different organizations throughout the community such as Val Verde County Child Welfare Board, the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce Red Carpet Committee, City of Del Rio Special Events Committee, Sacred Heart Catholic Church Fest Committee, church where she has also served as a CCD teacher.
Calderón has also been part or volunteered with the Falcon Arts Center Foundation, the Del Rio Elks Lodge, International Good Neighbor Council, American GI Forum – San Felipe Del Rio Women’s Chapter, the Whitehead Memorial Museum, Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch and has volunteered in the Val Verde County food distribution efforts.
Calderón is one of the founding members and current president of the Del Rio Downtown Association which supports and promotes the businesses in the downtown area.
She decided to run for office encouraged by her circle of friends.
“Many people have been trusting me by asking for information, directions, etc, and that gave me the opportunity to serve. I was raised in San Felipe, I live in San Felipe, so when I saw the opportunity I decided to go for it. I wasn’t ready since I am not a politician, but I am someone to serve,” she said.
Calderón said as an elected official she will be focusing on improving the quality of life of the people in District 3, but she will also be serving the entire Del Rio community.
“I am focusing on the economic growth of Del Rio, and it comes with the businesses, and leadership, right now we are lacking some leadership,” she said.
She also said the streets should always be a priority, as well as cleaning up the city, “there are places where the trash should be picked up and is not being picked up, there are abandoned buildings. Also, the downtown area even though it’s not in my district, I am going to be part of the council, so my vote counts,” she said.
Calderón said her priorities will also include recreation areas, such as all the city parks and the San Felipe Creek and creekwalk, some of the most valuable assets of the community.
“People have been calling me about trash and abandoned mobile homes, and I have been working with the city manager to look into those issues which we will be addressing soon,” she said.

DEL RIO- Delriense de toda la vida, una voz de la comunidad y alguien que ha estado muy involucrada con diferentes aspectos de la ciudad, pasó recientemente a formar parte del concilio de la ciudad de Del Río.
Alexandra Falcón Calderón, delriense nacida y criada en San Felipe, fue elegida el 3 de noviembre para servir como concejal del Distrito 3, y desde entonces ha estado aprendiendo cómo servir mejor a los residentes de este sector así como a la comunidad de Del Río en su conjunto.
Como propietaria de un pequeño negocio ubicado en el centro de Del Río, Calderón también está consciente de las necesidades y posibilidades de estos sectores de la economía.
“He estado muy involucrada en la comunidad con varias organizaciones, en eventos”, dijo.
A lo largo de los años, Calderón ha desempeñado funciones clave en diferentes organizaciones de la comunidad, como la Junta de Bienestar Infantil del Condado de Val Verde, el Comité de Alfombra Roja de la Cámara de Comercio de Del Río, el Comité de Eventos Especiales de la Ciudad de Del Río, el Comité de Festivales de la Iglesia Católica del Sagrado Corazón, iglesia donde también se ha desempeñado como maestra de CCD.
Calderón también ha sido parte o ha sido voluntaria de la Fundación Falcon Arts Center, Del Rio Elks Lodge, el Concilio Internacional de la Buena Vecindad, American GI Forum - San Felipe Del Rio Women's Chapter, el Museo Whitehead Memorial, Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch y ha sido voluntaria en esfuerzos de distribución de alimentos del Condado Val Verde.
Calderón es uno de los miembros fundadores y actual presidenta de la Asociación del Centro de Del Río, la cual apoya y promueve los negocios en el centro de la ciudad.
Decidió postularse para un cargo incentivada por su círculo de amigos.
“Mucha gente ha estado confiando en mí para pedir información, direcciones, etc., y eso me dio la oportunidad de servir. Me crié en San Felipe, vivo en San Felipe, así que cuando vi la oportunidad decidí ir por ella. No estaba lista porque no soy política, pero soy alguien a quien le gusta servir ”, dijo.
Calderón dijo que como funcionaria electa se enfocará en mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas en el Distrito 3, pero que también estará sirviendo a toda la comunidad de Del Rio.
“Me estoy enfocando en el crecimiento económico de Del Rio, y viene con los negocios y el liderazgo, en este momento nos falta algo de liderazgo”, dijo.
También dijo que las calles deben ser siempre una prioridad, además de limpiar la ciudad, “hay lugares donde se debe recoger la basura y no se está recogiendo, hay edificios abandonados. Además, el centro de la ciudad, aunque no está en mi distrito, voy a ser parte del concilio, así que mi voto cuenta ”, dijo.
Calderón dijo que sus prioridades también incluirán áreas de recreación, tales como todos los parques de la ciudad, el Arroyo San Felipe y el paseo del arroyo, algunos de los activos más valiosos de la comunidad.
“La gente me ha estado llamando para reportar basura y casas móviles abandonadas, y he estado trabajando con el administrador de la ciudad para investigar esos problemas que abordaremos pronto”, dijo.
