SAN ANGELO – In honor of the opening of National Police Week on Monday, May 13th there was a flag raising ceremony held at the Police Headquarters. Among the attendees were local law enforcement, retirees and military members. "Our uniforms might be different, but we stand shoulder to shoulder with our commitment to the safety and protection of others and for that I thank you. There are more than 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in the United States. Since 1791 there have been 21,500 officers killed in the line of duty, 1,955 of those officers were from Texas," stated SAPD Chief Carter.
There was statue dedication in honor of all fallen officers. This statue was created by Artist Raul Ruiz. "As a sculptor and painter, I don't think I could fill the shoes of an officer. While I was working on this, I learned how many people dedicate and lost their lives to be an officer. I am honored and humbled that I was chosen, and I thank God for that," Commented Ruiz.
It is an image of Dakota Martin and Clara Cotton. Officer Martin representing the officers and Clara representing the innocence of the community. Inside this monument, there is a time capsule tat holds badges and photographs of all the chiefs that have served as well as some special tributes to fallen officers Wagner, Anderson, Kennedy and Padron.
Rusty Herndon, a former sergeant with SAPD, now retired was also present at the ceremony. He was involved in starting the statue mission back in 2002. "I love San Angelo, I was born and raised here this is my home. I always wanted to give to the community and be a part of something bigger and I think I have," concluded Herndon.

SAN ANGELO – El lunes 13 de mayo, se llevó a cabo una ceremonia de izamiento de bandera en el cuartel general de la policía en honor a la apertura de la semana nacional de la policía. Entre los asistentes se encontraban policías locales, jubilados y militares. "Nuestros uniformes pueden ser diferentes, pero estamos hombro con hombro con nuestro compromiso con la seguridad y la protección de los demás, y por eso les agradezco. Hay más de 900,000 oficiales de la ley que prestan servicio en los Estados Unidos. Desde 1791 ha habido 21,500 oficiales muertos en la línea del deber, 1,955 de esos oficiales eran de Texas", declaró Carter, jefe de SAPD.
También se dedicó una estatua en honor a todos los oficiales caídos. Esta estatua fue creada por el artista Raúl Ruiz. "Como escultor y pintor, no creo que pueda llenar los zapatos de un oficial. Mientras trabajaba en esto, aprendí cuántas personas dedican y pierden su vida para ser oficiales. Me siento honrado y humilde de haber sido elegido, y le agradezco a Dios por eso," Comentó Ruiz.
