Lanny Layman Chairman of the Board of SAISD aims to be re-elected

SAN ANGELO – Lanny Layman lived in San Angelo while growing up, later leaving the city. He returned in 1995. He worked for Standard Sales Co., LP as operations manager then promoted to President and CEO in 2010. After 45 years, he recently retired in December of 2018. “I think my business background and business acumen, helped prepare me for the roll I’m in right now.”
He became an SAISD board member in 2001 then elected president in 2005. “Hiring someone to serve as superintendent is an important part this position. I think my background helps me understand who a good leader will be and who will not.” stated Layman. His experience in building and understanding budgets has also been a benefit for the board and community.
It is important to have a good understanding of what students and the community expect for education and to have experienced leaders that are student focused. “SAISD offers several services and we want to make sure those services are of high quality” stated Layman. The most important thing is student achievement. “If students are not doing well the community will not do well today, tomorrow or in the future.”
Historically, SAISD has outperformed cities to the west including Dallas, San Antonio and Austin. In recent tests they did not perform as well, so proactive measures have been implemented to improve that area. In other areas that the states rates such as college entrance, college readiness, graduation rates and drop out rates SAISD is doing better than average.
An important issue in education is that there are not enough educators. SAISD starts as early as April to look for and hire the best, an advantage is that locally at ASU there are about 70 students who are working on an education career. Hiring quality leaders into the district draws other people to come to our district. “Bringing the best of the best from the teaching field brings quality and morals which will translate to good student success” said Layman.
“Education is a tough business” Layman stated. Everything must be focused on the students, starting with the first experience of the day which is with their bus driver. Relationships with employees affect the students very much. Standards and expectations must be set for everyone in the district to look out for what is best for the students.
People need to be motivated to go out and vote. “I am pretty comfortable that we’ll do well” Lanny encourages the people that know him to go out and vote, “if they don’t vote I won’t win.”

"Si los estudiantes no lo están haciendo bien, la comunidad no lo hará bien hoy, mañana o en el futuro".

La contratación de líderes de calidad en el distrito atrae a otras personas a venir a nuestro distrito. "Traer lo mejor de lo mejor del campo de la enseñanza trae calidad y moral que se traducirá en un buen éxito estudiantil", dijo Layman.
"La educación es un negocio difícil", declaró Layman. Todo debe estar enfocado en los estudiantes, comenzando con la primera experiencia del día que es con el conductor del autobús. Las relaciones con los empleados afectan mucho a los estudiantes. Se deben establecer estándares y expectativas para que todos en el distrito estén atentos a lo que es mejor para los estudiantes.
La gente necesita estar motivada para salir y votar. "Estoy bastante cómodo de que lo haremos bien". Lanny alienta a las personas que lo conocen a salir y votar, "si no votan, no ganaré".
