SAN ANGELO - Saturday, Jan. 23, has been officially proclaimed “Gregorio Gutierrez Day” in San Angelo in honor of the founder of Conexión San Ángelo and Conexión Del Rio, who passed away Dec.13, 2020 from COVID-19.
Gutierrez will be honored at the Railway Museum of San Angelo Jan. 23. Living History tours of the museum on this day will be conducted in Spanish by Angelo State University's Association of Mexican-American Students (AMAS). A donation box will be available for contributions to the Gutierrez family.
Gutierrez grew up in Mexico where he began working at the age of 12. In 1986 he started a new life for himself in San Angelo and found love. After his marriage to Araceli Gutierrez, Gregorio's vision of reaching an audience by means not met in San Angelo came to be. Together he and his wife founded the first bilingual newspaper in San Angelo, Conexión Hispana. They founded Conexión Del Rio in 2008.
“Gregorio was the voice of and a strong advocate for Hispanic people. Señor Gutierrez’s newspaper has been a significant part of communication for the Spanish-speaking population for over 30 years. We are honored to be a part of Gregorio Gutierrez Day,” President of the Board of the Railway Museum Suzanna Valenzuela said.
The publisher of the Spanish-English newspaper received many awards over the years. For example, in 2016 he received the Appreciation Award from the Housing Authority of The City of Del Rio in recognition for public contribution to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
In 2017 he was recognized for “the invaluable service to promote the communication and culture of communities such as San Angelo and Del Rio, Passion and Pride for México” by the Mexican Consulate, presented by Carlos Obrador Garrido Cuesta and a Diversity Recognition Award was presented to him by the San Angelo Chamber Commerce. In 2018 Lions International honored him for Exceptional Contributions, Loyalty, and Dedication and the Pachyderm Club awarded him the “Community Spirit and Entrepreneurial Recognition” award for his work with Conexión San Angelo.
Conexión holds an annual Christmas Posada where gifts and funds are raised for San Angelo’s children most in need. The Christmas Posada recently celebrated its 17th Anniversary.
The Railway Museum at 703 S. Chadbourne will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021. A proclamation naming Gregorio Gutierrez Day will be read at 10 a.m.
Valenzuela said, “If you never got a chance to thank Gregorio for his tireless work for our community, this is a chance to make a donation in his name.”

El sábado 23 de enero fue proclamado oficialmente como “Día de Gregorio Gutiérrez” en San Ángelo, en honor al fundador de Conexión San Ángelo y Conexión Del Río, quien falleció el 13 de diciembre de 2020 a causa de COVID-19.
Gutiérrez será homenajeado en el Museo Ferroviario de San Ángelo el 23 de enero. Los recorridos de Historia Viva del museo en este día serán conducidos en español y guiados por la Asociación de Estudiantes Mexicano-Americanos (AMAS) de Angelo State University. Habrá una caja de donaciones disponible para contribuciones a la familia Gutiérrez.
Gutiérrez creció en México, donde comenzó a trabajar a la edad de 12 años. En 1986 comenzó una nueva vida en San Ángelo y encontró el amor. Después de su matrimonio con Araceli Gutiérrez, surgió la visión de Gregorio de llegar a una audiencia por medios que en ese momento no existían en San Ángelo. Juntos, él y su esposa fundaron el primer periódico bilingüe en San Ángelo, Conexión Hispana. Fundaron Conexión Del Río en 2008.
“Gregorio fue la voz y un firme defensor de los hispanos. El periódico del Señor Gutiérrez ha sido una parte importante de la comunicación para la población de habla hispana durante más de 30 años. Nos sentimos honrados de ser parte del Día de Gregorio Gutiérrez ”, dijo Suzanna Valenzuela, Presidenta de la Junta del Museo Ferroviario.
El publicista del periódico en español e inglés recibió numerosos premios a lo largo de los años. Por ejemplo, en 2016 recibió el Premio de Apreciación de la Autoridad de Vivienda de la Ciudad de Del Río en reconocimiento a la contribución pública al programa Asistencia Voluntaria al Impuesto sobre la Renta (VITA).
En 2017 fue reconocido por “el invaluable servicio para promover la comunicación y cultura de comunidades como San Ángelo y Del Río, Pasión y Orgullo por México” por el Consulado de México, presentado por el Cónsul Carlos Obrador Garrido Cuesta y se entregó un Premio de Reconocimiento a la Diversidad por la Cámara de Comercio de San Ángelo. En 2018, Lions International lo honró por sus contribuciones excepcionales, su lealtad y dedicación, y el Club Paquidermo le otorgó el premio "Espíritu comunitario y reconocimiento empresarial" por su trabajo con Conexión San Ángelo.
Conexión realiza una posada navideña anual donde se recaudan regalos y fondos para los niños más necesitados de San Ángelo.
El Museo del Ferrocarril, ubicado en 703 S. Chadbourne, estará abierto de 10 a.m. a 4 p.m. el sábado 23 de enero de 2021. A las 10 a.m. se leerá una proclama nombrando el Día de Gregorio Gutiérrez.
