San Angelo, Texas – City Council Member, District 6, Billie DeWitt spoke with Conexión about her life in San Angelo. DeWitt’s District includes Southwest San Angelo, the Bluffs, and up to College Hills. DeWitt has been a lifelong resident of San Angelo except for a 10-year time span in which her job at Ethicon moved her to New Mexico and Ohio. “The first opportunity I got I came back to my first love, San Angelo,” commented DeWitt.
When her mother was able to purchase their first home, it was on W. Avenue X which was considered the barrio. “I had friends in the barrio as well as in the African American community,” commented DeWitt. Growing up in San Angelo she felt like it was a community that cared about what happened to everyone but especially to children. DeWitt graduated from Central High School and attended Angelo State University.
DeWitt worked at Ethicon for 34 years and retired in 2004 as the Plant Human Resources Manager. Throughout her career she was encouraged by managers to obtain her degree, this opened new doors for DeWitt. After retiring and taking care of her mother in the last years of her life, DeWitt was encouraged by her husband and her son to get involved in City Government.
With just over 2 years in the position now she feels it has been a good learning experience. “I think we work well together because we are all concerned about wanting the best for the city of San Angelo,” commented DeWitt. Bringing new businesses to the city is big on the city council agenda. This would help reduce property taxes. Infrastructure is also important. “We have a 10-year $80,000,000 project to reconstruct some of the streets. The capital improvement plan is the order that the streets will be fixed,” commented DeWitt. This will be a fix of mill and overlay. The city is currently working on getting mill and overlay equipment.
Dewitt’s term is up in May 2021, right now she has not decided if she will run again. She encourages the citizens to get involved and serve on city boards and become informed individuals. “I love San Angelo, and that is one of the reasons why I wanted to retire in San Angelo. I want San Angelo to be the very best that it can be and that will always be my goal whether I am on the city council or just living day by day,” concluded Dewitt.

San Angelo, Texas – Billie DeWitt, miembro del concejo municipal representante del Distrito 6, habló con Conexión sobre su vida en San Angelo. El distrito de DeWitt incluye el suroeste de San Angelo, los Bluffs y hasta la College Hills. DeWitt ha sido residente de toda la vida de San Angelo, excepto por un período de 10 años en el que su trabajo en Ethicon la trasladó a Nuevo México y Ohio. "La primera oportunidad que tuve, regresé a mi primer amor, San Angelo", comentó DeWitt.
Cuando su madre pudo comprar su primera casa, fue al Oeste de la Avenida X, lo que se consideraba el barrio. "Tenía amigos en el barrio y en la comunidad afroamericana", comentó DeWitt. Al crecer en San Angelo, sentía que era una comunidad que se preocupaba por lo que les sucedía a todos, pero en especialmente a los niños. DeWitt se graduó de la escuela preparatoria central y asistió a Angelo State University.
DeWitt trabajó en Ethicon durante 34 años y en 2004 se retiró como gerente de recursos humanos de la Planta. A lo largo de su carrera, los gerentes la alentaron a obtener su título, lo que abrió nuevas puertas para DeWitt. Después de retirarse y cuidar a su madre en los últimos años de su vida, su esposo y su hijo estimularon a DeWitt a involucrarse en el gobierno de la ciudad.
Con poco más de 2 años en el puesto, ahora siente que ha sido una buena experiencia de aprendizaje. "Creo que juntos trabajamos bien porque todos estamos preocupados por querer lo mejor para la ciudad de San Angelo", comentó DeWitt. En la agenda del ayuntamiento es importante traer nuevos negocios a la ciudad. Esto ayudaría a reducir los impuestos a la propiedad. La infraestructura también es importante. “Tenemos un proyecto de $ 80,000,000 a 10 años para reconstruir algunas de las calles. El plan de mejora de capital es el orden en que se arreglarán las calles”, comentó DeWitt. Esta será una solución de revolver y revestir. Actualmente, la ciudad está trabajando para obtener equipos para revolver y de revestimiento.
El mandato de DeWitt termina en mayo de 2021, en este momento no ha decidido si volverá a postularse. Ella alienta a los ciudadanos a involucrarse y servir en los consejos municipales y convertirse en personas informadas. “Amo a San Angelo, y esa es una de las razones por las que quería jubilarme en San Angelo. Quiero que San Angelo sea lo mejor que pueda ser y ese siempre será mi objetivo, ya sea que esté en el consejo de la ciudad o simplemente viviendo día a día”, concluyó DeWitt.
