San Angelo, Texas – In 2006 Julie Raymond helped found a nonprofit organization called Art in Uncommon Places (AIUP). Raymond was an art teacher for 20 years. When she retired, she dedicated her time and talent to AIUP.
According to Raymond, the mission of AIUP is to design, create, and gift prominent and functional works of art to the community for all those that are disadvantaged. “We are taking the art to the people,” stated Raymond.
“Art in Uncommon Places has only 2 full-time employees, being myself and my partner Joy Thomas.” stated Raymond. The rest of the staff are volunteers.
AIUP studio is not open all day due to the daily jobs of the artists, but the Open-Air Museums along the Concho River and Red Arroyo, as well as Paint Brush Alley and the Pop Art Museum are accessible to the public 24 hours a day. There is a fee to have an event at the locations, but the public can enjoy the art at no cost at any time.
