San Angelo, Texas – For Mercedes Rassi, a San Angelo educator, students of any economic or social background, should see the world out there as an opportunity to start a journey for better education.
“I think a lot of times specially on how Hispanic students who come from poverty, they see San Angelo as the only world that exists,” said Rassi. “That could be a hard thing when they feel like they don’t fit in.”
Rassi says that way of thinking is not true because San Angelo is not the only place that you can succeed.
“The world is so much bigger than West Texas,” Rassi said. “It is good to go out, seek education, seek opportunities, and bring that back to my community.”
Rassi after she graduated from Central High School in San Angelo, she went to the State of Florida to study Literature and Latin to a Catholic Liberal Arts College, subjects that are not very popular things to study in college.
“It was a challenge for me,” she said. “I learned things that I would not do otherwise, met people from all over the United States.”
The educator said that being away from her family in San Angelo made her able to grow by depending on friends and other people who faced situations similar or different to hers.
She said that during her time in Florida, she was able to connect with the migrant agriculture community and volunteer in tomato and orange farming.
“A community of people that came to this country with nothing,” she said. “We tried to teach migrant kids’ education, and build in them to be useful to society.”

San Ángelo, Texas – Para Mercedes Rassi, una educadora de San Ángelo, los estudiantes de cualquier origen económico o social, deberían ver el mundo como una oportunidad para comenzar un viaje hacia una mejor educación.
"Muchas veces he pensado especialmente en cómo los estudiantes hispanos que vienen de la pobreza ven a San Ángelo como el único mundo que existe", dijo Rassi. "Eso podría ser algo difícil cuando sienten que no encajan".
Rassi dice qué esa forma de pensar no es cierta porque San Ángelo no es el único lugar donde puedes tener éxito.
"El mundo es mucho más grande que el Oeste de Texas", dijo Rassi. "Es bueno salir, buscar educación, buscar oportunidades y traer eso de vuelta a mi comunidad".
Después de graduarse de la escuela preparatoria Central en San Ángelo, Rassi, fue al Estado de Florida para estudiar Literatura y Latín en un Colegio Católico de Artes Liberales, materias que no son muy populares para estudiar en la universidad.
"Eso fue un desafío para mí", dijo. "Aprendí cosas que no haría de otra manera, conocí gente de todo Estados Unidos".
La educadora dijo que estar lejos de su familia en San Ángelo la hizo capaz de crecer al depender de amigos y de otras personas que enfrentaban situaciones similares o diferentes a la de ella.
Ella dijo que, durante su tiempo en Florida, pudo conectarse con la comunidad agrícola migrante y ser voluntaria en el cultivo de tomate y naranja.
"Una comunidad de personas que vinieron a este país sin nada", dijo. "Tratamos de enseñar la educación de los niños migrantes y prepararlos para que sean útiles para la sociedad".
