Having been in the shoeshine business for 63 years, Ernie Cantu is considered one of the best. Cantu’s Shoe Shine Parlor cleans, conditions, soles boots, and also dyes boots.
SAN ANGELO – In 1960, 15-year-old Ernie Cantu started in the profession as a shoeshine boy also known as a boot polisher who dedicated himself and put some “elbow and grease” to learn the business from the ground up.
In those early days, Cantu’s starting pay was a dollar a day. His workstation was primarily traveling around the city of Amarillo, Texas, going from a business workplace such as bank, to a barbershop which actually paid better at $3.00.
63 years later, Cantu who is considered one of the best shoe shiners has an established business, Ernie’s Shoe Shine Parlor, and charges $20 for his services.
The shoeshine business like other businesses has greatly diminished due to a number of factors. One reason is more and more people are wearing causal shoes. Cantu stated that in the summer months a lot of people wear flip flops so his business goes through a downturn. However, when the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo comes to town for two weeks, his business makes up for some of the income lost during those summer months.
Cantu concluded the interview when asked to list the top tips to be considered a professional shoeshiner.
“Take pride in what you do. Don’t take any shortcuts. When a boot polisher says they already look shiny, I don’t have to do this or do that. I don’t do that regardless of whether they are shiny or not,” said Cantu.
“Enjoy your work, do it as good as you would do for yourself.”

“Disfruta tu trabajo, hazlo tan bien como lo harías por ti mismo”.
