Fort Concho celebrará con los soldados búfalo el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana, de 2pm a 3:30pm, el domingo 22 de febrero, en el Edificio del Comisariato del fuerte, ubicado en las calles Henry O. Flipper y Burgess. El programa es gratuito y abierto al público, con refrigerios.

El historiador militar y autor John Langellier, Ph.D., presentará "Los Regimientos de Soldados Búfalo y su Música", que destaca el legado musical de las tropas afroamericanas en el Oeste, de 1866 a 1900, y el papel que desempeñaron sus bandas de regimiento en el fortalecimiento de los vínculos con las comunidades cercanas.

Después del programa, los visitantes podrán tomar un carrito de transporte hasta el Cuartel 1 para ver una exposición especial sobre bandas de regimiento que presenta la colección de instrumentos musicales de Tom Railsback, de Great Falls, Montana. Railsback colaboró ​​con Langellier en el libro "The Drums Would Roll" sobre las bandas militares de finales del siglo XIX y donó su colección y materiales de investigación a Fort Concho en 2025.

El Cuartel 1 también contará con exposiciones sobre la historia del Standard-Times, los soldados búfalo y los comanches de Texas. Los visitantes también pueden visitar el Monumento Conmemorativo al Soldado Búfalo del Oeste de Texas, frente al fuerte.

Fort Concho sirvió como cuartel general del famoso 10.º Regimiento de Caballería, cuya banda de regimiento entretuvo a los residentes entre 1875 y 1882. El comandante Benjamin Grierson apoyó firmemente a la banda, ya que había sido músico antes de unirse al ejército.

Fort Concho will host a buffalo soldiers celebration for Black History Month from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at the fort’s Commissary Building at Henry O. Flipper and Burgess streets. The program is free and open to the public, with light refreshments provided.

Military historian and author John Langellier, Ph.D., will present “The Buffalo Soldier Regiments and Their Music,” highlighting Black troops’ musical legacy across the West from 1866 to 1900 and the role their regimental bands played in strengthening ties with nearby communities.Following the program, guests may ride a shuttle cart to Barracks 1 to view a special exhibit on regimental bands featuring the musical instrument collection of Tom Railsback of Great Falls, Montana.

Railsback collaborated with Langellier on the book “The Drums Would Roll” about late-1800s military bands and donated his collection and research materials to Fort Concho in 2025.Barracks 1 will also feature exhibits on the history of the Standard-Times, buffalo soldiers and the Comanches of Texas. Guests may visit the West Texas Buffalo Soldier Memorial across the street from the fort, as well.Fort Concho served as headquarters of the famed 10th Cavalry Regiment, whose regimental band entertained residents from 1875 to 1882. Commander Benjamin Grierson strongly supported the band, having been a musician before joining the army.
