San Angelo, Texas – Congressman Mike Conaway was one of the Honorary co-hosts at the 16th annual West Texas Legislative Summit which took place August 7th and 8th , 2019. Conexión had the opportunity to speak to Conaway regarding the summit as well as the recent mass shooting in El Paso and his plans after retirement.
The topic this year is trade. “Mexico is one of Texas’ biggest trading partners,” stated Conaway the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) provides good labor standard requirements for Mexico to comply with. If they do comply, wages will go up. It also includes Labor organizing efforts allowing laborers to unionize and protect themselves from employers.
“It’s a horrible circumstance and it breaks your heart if you have a heart. Obviously, the guy who did it didn’t have a heart” stated Congressman Conaway as he expressed his thoughts about the mass shooting that took place in El Paso. It is hard to protect the freedoms that citizens enjoy when people use these freedoms to hurt other people. “Our focus should be on figuring out how this individual got to this point in his life where he thought that this made sense, and he thought this act would improve the rest of the world. To you and me that is the most irrational conduct and makes no sense whatsoever, but in his mind it did,” stated Conaway.
Congressman Mike Conaway is currently serving his eighth term in the U.S. House of Representatives 11th congressional district. Earlier this year he announced that he will not be asking for the people’s vote in the 2020 election. He has 17 months left in his current position, finishing off at the end of December of 2020. Once in retirement, Conaway plans to spend his time with his wife Suzanne. “She has a list of things she would like us to do during the next years of our life,” concluded Conaway.

San Angelo, Texas – El congresista Mike Conaway fue uno de los anfitriones titulares en la 16ª Cumbre Legislativa del Oeste de Texas que se realizó del 7 al 8 de agosto de 2019. Conexión tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con Conaway sobre la cumbre, así como sobre el reciente tiroteo masivo en El Paso y sus planes después de la jubilación.

"México es uno de los socios comerciales más grandes de Texas", afirmó Conaway, el Acuerdo Estados Unidos-México-Canadá (USMCA) establece buenos requisitos de estándares laborales para que México los cumpla. Si cumplen, los salarios subirán. También incluye esfuerzos de organización laboral que permiten a los trabajadores sindicalizarse y protegerse de los empleadores.
"Es una circunstancia horrible y te rompe el corazón si tienes un corazón. Obviamente, el tipo que lo hizo no tenía corazón ", declaró el congresista Conaway mientras expresaba sus pensamientos sobre el tiroteo masivo que tuvo lugar en El Paso. Es difícil proteger las libertades que disfrutan los ciudadanos cuando las personas usan estas libertades para lastimar a otras personas. “Nuestro enfoque debería ser descubrir cómo este individuo llegó a este punto de su vida en el que pensó que esto tenía sentido, y pensó que este acto mejoraría el resto del mundo. Para usted y para mí, esa es la conducta más irracional y no tiene ningún sentido, pero en su opinión lo hizo”, dijo Conaway.
El congresista Mike Conaway actualmente está cumpliendo su octavo mandato en el distrito 11 del Congreso de la Cámara de Representantes de EE. UU. A principios de este año, anunció que no solicitará el voto del pueblo en las elecciones de 2020. Le quedan 17 meses en su puesto actual, terminando a fines de Diciembre de 2020. Una vez que se jubile, Conaway planea pasar su tiempo con su esposa Suzanne. "Ella tiene una lista de cosas que le gustaría que hagamos durante los próximos años de nuestra vida", concluyó Conaway.
