SAN ANGELO – Image being at the starting line and your competitors have been given a huge head start?
That is exactly what Pastor Gary Jenkins, an independent running for the Tom Green County Judge position is facing in four Republican candidates who have an advantage over him due to the system “stacked” against him and others.
“The election laws are discriminatory against independent candidates,” said Jenkins.
Pastor Jenkins, chairman and founder of The Gospel America Network stated that if he were a Republican candidate, he would have the automatic endorsement as either a Republican or Democrat.
With the way the election laws are currently in place, his name would be on the primary ballot. However, as a “candidate who is an independent it doesn’t work that way.”
Jenkins was allowed to file as a candidate, do advertising, campaign, raise funds, etc. But he is not allowed to have people endorse him until after the primaries and the run-offs which are held in May. In essence, as an independent candidate, Jenkins needs signatures for a petition to get his name on the ballot starting from May 25 through June 23, 2022.
Mr. Jenkins’ plan is to ask Governor Greg Abbott, Representative Drew Darby, and Senator Charles Perry to introduce a bill that will change the endorsement process on political campaigning. “I should be allowed to get endorsements right now, but can’t until the run-offs are over” he said.
Pastor Jenkins concluded the interview as his situation being similar to the biblical narrative of David vs. Goliath. In this case, Jenkins being David, an independent versus Goliath represented by the Election laws system that is unfair, a “stacked deck” if you will against independents such as he.
