¿Qué dice la Biblia?

¿Qué es el amor? La definición que la mayoría de la gente usa para el amor es: “Una sensación placentera que siento cuando me salgo con la mía”. Como en “Me encanta el helado”. ¿Qué dice la Biblia?

1 Corintios 13:4-5: “El amor es paciente y bondadoso; el amor no es celoso ni jactancioso; no es arrogante ni grosero. El amor no insiste en lo suyo; no se irrita ni guarda rencor”.

De este pasaje aprendemos:

1. El amor es paciente. Cuando amamos, nos enfocamos totalmente en el bien de la persona que amamos. Así que, si tarda, esperamos.

2. El amor es bondadoso. La bondad es una actitud y una acción. Incluso los gatos y los perros reconocen la bondad cuando la ven.

3. El amor no es celoso. Cuando amamos, nuestra atención se centra en la persona que amamos. No pensamos en nosotros mismos, así que nos alegramos de cualquier cosa buena que le suceda a la persona que amamos.

4. El amor no es jactancioso. Aquí, nuevamente, nos enfocamos en los demás. No hay deseo de hacernos quedar bien.

5. El amor no es arrogante. Esta actitud de autoimportancia y menosprecio hacia los demás es exactamente lo opuesto al amor.

Anteriormente, en 1 Corintios 13, la Escritura dice que, aunque hagamos grandes cosas, si no tenemos amor, de nada nos sirve. La mayoría necesitamos un nuevo modelo a seguir. Jesús es Dios y, sin embargo, vino aquí con simples personas y se humilló. ¿Por qué? Porque nos amó.

What Does the Bible Say?

What is love? The definition that most people use for love is, “A pleasant feeling I get when I get my way.” As in, “I love ice cream.” What does the Bible say?

I Corinthians 13:4-5 “Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;”

From this scripture we learn:

1. Love is patient. When we love we are totally focused on the good of the one we love. So if it takes time we wait.

2. Love is kind. Kindness is an attitude and action. Even cats and dogs know kindness when they see it.

3. Love is not jealous. When we love our attention is focused on the one we love. We are not thinking about ourselves so we are happy with whatever good happens to the one we love.

4. Love is not boastful. Here again our focus is on others. There is no desire to make us look good.

5. Love is not arrogant. This attitude of self-importance and looking down on others is the exact opposite of love.

Earlier in 1 Corinthians 13 the scripture says that even if we do really great things but have not love we gain nothing. Most of us need a new pattern to follow. Jesus is God and yet He came here with mere people and humbled himself. Why? Because He loved us.
