¿Qué dice la Biblia?

Hacemos planes sobre el futuro y sobre nuestro lugar en él. Planificamos a largo plazo y a corto plazo. A veces elaboramos planes de contingencia por si nuestros planes iniciales no resultan. ¿Qué dice la Biblia?

«Vamos ahora, ustedes que dicen: “Hoy o mañana iremos a tal o cual ciudad, pasaremos allí un año, haremos negocios y obtendremos ganancias”; cuando ni siquiera saben lo que sucederá mañana. ¿Qué es su vida? Pues ustedes son como la niebla que aparece por un poco de tiempo y luego se desvanece. En cambio, deberían decir: “Si el Señor quiere, viviremos y haremos esto o aquello”. Pero tal como están las cosas, ustedes se jactan en su arrogancia. Toda jactancia de este tipo es mala. A quien sabe hacer lo bueno y no lo hace, eso se le considera pecado». Santiago 4:13-17

De esta escritura aprendemos:

1. No conocemos el futuro.

2. Es posible que ni siquiera estemos vivos en el futuro.

3. Proclamar con audacia lo que haremos en el futuro es presuntuoso y arrogante.

4. Lo que deberíamos decir es: «Si el Señor quiere».

5. Cuando planificamos de esta manera, damos gloria a Dios al declarar que creemos que Él está presente en el futuro y que sabe lo que es mejor.

What Does the Bible Say?

We make plans about the future and our place in it. We plan for the long term and for the short term. We sometimes make contingency plants in case our first plans don’t work out. What does the Bible say?

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and get gain”; whereas you do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and we shall do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Whoever knows what is right to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” James 4:13-17

From this scripture we learn:

1. We do not know the future.

2. We may not even be alive in the future.

3. To boldly proclaim what we will do in the future is presumptive and arrogant.

4. What we should say is “If the Lord wills.”

5. When we plan this way we give glory to God by declaring that we believe God is present in the future and knows what is best.
