University Theatre at Angelo State University will present the two-time Tony Award-winning rock musical, “American Idiot,” for its final production of the spring 2019 season, beginning Thursday, April 25, in the ASU Modular Theatre.
Performances will be at 8 p.m. April 25-27 and May 2-4, with a Sunday matinee performance at 2 p.m. on April 28. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for non-ASU students, and free for ASU students, Arts at ASU subscribers and ASU Activity Card holders. The Modular Theatre is located in the Carr Education-Fine Arts (EFA) Building, 2602 Dena Drive.
Based on the book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer, “American Idiot” features music and lyrics from the rock band Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album of the same name.
“American Idiot” tells the story of Johnny, Tunny and Will, who are struggling to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths are quickly estranged when Tunny enters the military, Will is called back home to attend to familial responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. An energy-fueled rock opera, “American Idiot” features little dialogue and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s groundbreaking album to execute the story line.
*For mature audiences. Production contains explicit language and adult subject matter, as well as strobe and atmospheric effects like haze and fog.
Tickets are on sale now in the ASU box office. The box office is open 2-6 p.m. weekdays. For reservations and/or ticket information, call 325-942-2000.
