SAN ANGELO – Angie Smetana, Superintendent, Creek ISD, has been in the Grape Creek /San Angelo area since she was five years old. Graduating from Water Valley High School going on to get her bachelor’s at ASU. Her career began as a student teacher at Grape Creek then at Glenmore Elementary teaching before getting back to where her heart was, in Grape Creek. There she started as Transition Coordinator for special needs students. Having obtained then her Masters, she served as assistant principal then principal. When the opportunity to become the Grape Creek ISD Superintendent came about she took it and has been going strong in this position for three years. When interviewed by Conexion San Angelo, she commented. “Everything I did complemented the next step, so I knew it was a God thing that there was a reason for everything.
The school has had a mission for several years”. In the last 2 and a half years they have been able build 2 field houses, purchase band uniforms and purchase laptops for every student. We have done a lot technology wise for the kids so that they can be prepared for the future”.
The graduating classes at Grape Creek range from 85 to 100 students. “Wanting all the children to start on an even playing field” Smetana implemented a change in the pre-k class of the elementary school focusing on ESL students and breaking the language barrier. “We don’t want any child to feel that they are not smart enough or good enough”.
GCISD will soon benefit from 3 shelter-safe rooms. These facilities will be gyms, this way in emergencies their communities and others can be housed. Together with multiple partners GCISD is helping their students prepare for their college years. The high school students are earning double credit with Howard College and they are looking at a new program with ASU. For students not interested in college they have partnered with Tom Green County in getting students certified in different industries such as welding, electrical and plumbing.
In the future Grape Creek ISD will partner with Galilee CDC to bring a grocery store, and some type of medical facility to the community. Together with Tom Green County Judge Floyd and Rick Bacon, Tom Green County Commissioner Precinct 3, Smetana is looking to build a park for the community.
This year GCISD will not be on the ballot in the upcoming election. She stated “I have a very good group of board members; they get along very well and are very supportive. They also love their community”
Parent involvement and growing the students is at the top of the list GCISD. Focusing on how we can best serve the students, monitor them, reteach if we need to. “There is always room to become better”, stated Smetana. Safety is also important, and they want to continually improve on. There is an app that will be implemented where students will be able to report any situations, they feel need to be addressed.

SAN ANGELO – Angie Smetana, Superintendente de Escuelas de Grape Creek ISD, ella ha estado en el área de Grape Creek / San Angelo desde que tenía cinco años. Se graduó en Water Valley High School y se graduó en ASU. Su carrera comenzó como docente estudiantil en Grape Creek y luego en la enseñanza primaria de Glenmore antes de volver a donde estaba su corazón, en Grape Creek. Allí comenzó como Coordinadora de Transición para estudiantes con necesidades especiales. Habiendo obtenido entonces su maestría, se desempeñó como subdirectora y luego directora. Cuando se presentó la oportunidad de convertirse en la Superintendente del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Grape Creek, ella la aprovechó y se ha mantenido fuerte en esta posición durante tres años. Al ser entrevistada por conexión San Ángelo, ella comentó. “Todo lo que hice complementó el siguiente paso, así que supe que era una cosa de Dios que había una razón para todo.
La escuela ha tenido una misión durante varios años.” En los últimos 2 años y medio, han podido construirse 2 casas de campo, comprar uniformes de banda y comprar computadoras portátiles para cada estudiante. Hemos hecho un gran uso de la tecnología para los niños para que puedan estar preparados para el futuro".
Las clases de graduación en Grape Creek van de 85 a 100 estudiantes. “Queriendo que todos los niños comiencen en un campo de juego parejo”, implementó un cambio en la clase de preescolar de la escuela primaria, enfocándose en los estudiantes de ESL y rompiendo la barrera del idioma. Dijo Smetana, "No queremos que ningún niño sienta que no es lo suficientemente inteligente o lo suficientemente bueno"
GCISD pronto se beneficiará de 3 alojamientos para refugio. Estas instalaciones serán gimnasios, de esta manera en emergencias sus comunidades y otras pueden ser alojadas. GCISD junto con múltiples socios, está ayudando a sus estudiantes a prepararse para sus años universitarios. Los estudiantes de secundaria están obteniendo un doble crédito con Howard College y están buscando un nuevo programa con ASU. Para los estudiantes que no están interesados en la universidad, se han asociado con el condado de Tom Green para obtener la certificación de los estudiantes en diferentes industrias, como soldadura, electricidad y plomería.
En el futuro, Grape Creek ISD se asociará con Galilee CDC para traer una tienda de comestibles y algún tipo de instalación médica a la comunidad. Smetana está buscando construir un parque para la comunidad junto con Floyd, juez del condado Tom Green y Rick Bacon, Comisionado del recinto 3, del Condado Tom Green.
GCISD, este año no estará en la boleta electoral en las próximas elecciones. Ella dijo: “Tengo un grupo muy bueno de miembros de la junta; Se llevan muy bien y son muy solidarios. Ellos también aman a su comunidad".
La participación de los padres y el crecimiento de los estudiantes está en la parte superior de la lista GCISD. Centrándonos en cómo podemos servir mejor a los estudiantes, monitorearlos, repasarlos si es necesario. "Siempre hay espacio para mejorar", afirmó Smetana. La seguridad también es importante, y quieren mejorar continuamente.
