Texas is better when Mexico and Texas trade is strong

San Angelo, Texas – The 16th Annual West Texas Legislative Summit was held at the Houston Harte University Center. Activities were kicked off with a dinner and reception on Wednesday, August 7th at historic Fort Concho. On Thursday, August 8th panel discussions were held at the University Center. Every year the topics alternate between state and federal issues. Conexión had the opportunity to speak with Senator Charles Perry District 28 and Representative Drew Darby District 72.
“San Angelo is a great venue for the summit,” commented Senator Perry. The summit brings personal interaction with the people and policymakers and their staff. “Mexico is our largest trading partner as a state. Texas is better when Mexico and Texas trade is strong,” commented Perry. Expanding the 127 corridor from Laredo to Canada opens markets to make transport easier making this trade relationship stronger. “San Angelo has good leadership at the local level and great, engaged representation at the state and federal level. The city needs to recognize who they are own it and promote it,” concluded Perry.
Darby served as a moderator for a panel of congressmen discussing border issues and trade. When asked about his sentiments about the mass shooting in El Paso Darby stated, “My heart is broken, El Paso is a wonderful community. Hispanics are an important and vital part of America. Our economy would not exist but for the efforts of the immigrants, we are all immigrants in one way or another. I am very supportive of the issues facing the Hispanic community and work every day to make sure the Concho Valley loves, respects and enjoys the fruits of all our labors.” Representative Drew Darby took a moment to express his appreciation for Gregorio Gutierrez and Conexión stating, “You are an important part of informing the residents of San Angelo about what is going on. We have been friends for a long time so it’s always a pleasure to be with you and Conexión.”
The summit was packed with a lineup of congressmen, representatives of the ports of entry, Border Trade Alliance and the Texas Department of Transportation.

San Angelo, Texas – La 16ª Cumbre Legislativa Anual del Oeste de Texas se celebró en el Centro Universitario Houston Harte. Las actividades comenzaron con una cena y recepción el miércoles 7 de agosto en el histórico Fort Concho. El jueves 8 de agosto se realizaron paneles de discusión en el Centro Universitario. Cada año, los temas se alternan entre asuntos estatales y federales. Conexión tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con el Senador Charles Perry Distrito 28 y el Representante Drew Darby Distrito 72.
"San Angelo es un gran lugar para la cumbre", comentó el senador Perry. La cumbre trae interacción personal con las personas y los elaboradores de la política a seguir y su personal. “México es nuestro mayor socio comercial como estado. Texas es mejor cuando el comercio con México es fuerte”, comentó Perry. La expansión de los 127 corridos de Laredo a Canadá abre mercados para facilitar el transporte y fortalecer esta relación comercial. “San Angelo tiene un buen liderazgo a nivel local y una excelente representación comprometida a nivel estatal y federal. La ciudad necesita reconocer quiénes son y promoverla”, concluyó Perry.
Darby se desempeñó como moderador de un panel de congresistas que discutieron temas de frontera y comercio.
