Rick and Joni Lancaster’s 39-year marriage endured because the hardships in those early years forged a strong bond between them with the Lord in the center of their lives. The couple are members of SNAZ, First Church of the Nazarene, San Angelo.
SAN ANGELO – The majority of couples who have been married a long time know that Valentine’s Day has been commercialized and overhyped. Add also the fact that long after the big wedding day extravaganza and honeymoon has passed there is the “real” everyday life of living out those wedding vows and married life.
For Rick and Joni Lancaster, married 39 years come September 2022, both have been able to stay together because the hardships in those early years forged a strong “Lord in the center of their lives” bond between them stated Joni.
There’s a big difference between the wedding day and the marriage after. What would you say Pastor Joni to a generation of young women wanting to get married? “With God No. 1 in your life, both of you can work through things together with His help.”
Prior to marrying Rick, Joni at the age of 18 got married without really knowing or understanding the meaning of true love when it came to the dynamics of it within the marital relationship.
10 years later when Joni got married at 28-years-old, her love for Rick grew over those years because he always made her feel special. After nearly 39 years, Rick’s deep love for his lovely bride to this day has not wavered.
Rick was asked how has he been able to make his marriage work with Joni? “She threw the saddle on the horse and broke its stride” is the way Rick put it humorously. “You don’t have to be perfect but being spontaneous, exciting, and surprising her will work” he added.
“We have grown closer together because of all that we have been through. Couples who pray together, stay together” concluded Joni.

SAN ANGELO – La mayoría de las parejas que han estado casadas por mucho tiempo saben que el Día de San Valentín ha sido comercializado y exagerado. Eso sin contar que mucho después de pasado el día de la boda y la luna de miel, existe la vida cotidiana real de vivir esos votos matrimoniales y la vida matrimonial.
Rick y Joni Lancaster, quienes cumplirán 39 años de casados en septiembre de 2022, han podido permanecer juntos porque las dificultades de esos primeros años forjaron un fuerte vínculo entre ellos con el “Señor en el centro de sus vidas”, afirmó Joni.
Hay una gran diferencia entre el día de la boda y el matrimonio después. ¿Qué le diría Joni a una generación de mujeres jóvenes que quieren casarse? “Con Dios como el número uno en su vida, ambos pueden resolver las cosas juntos con Su ayuda”.
Antes de casarse con Rick, Joni, a la edad de 18 años, se casó sin saber o comprender realmente el significado del amor verdadero en lo que respecta a la dinámica del mismo dentro de la relación matrimonial.
Diez años después, cuando Joni se casó a los 28 años, su amor por Rick creció durante esos años porque él siempre la hizo sentir especial. Después de casi 39 años, el profundo amor de Rick por su encantadora novia hasta el día de hoy no ha flaqueado.
Se le preguntó a Rick cómo ha podido hacer que su matrimonio funcione con Joni. “Le arrojó la silla al caballo y le corto el paso”, es la forma en que Rick lo expresó con humor. “No tienes que ser perfecto, pero ser espontáneo, emocionante y sorprenderla funcionará”, agregó.
“Nos hemos vuelto más cercanos debido a todo lo que hemos pasado. Parejas que oran juntas, permanecen juntas”, concluyó Joni.
