San Angelo, Texas – The San Angelo Family Shelter held its annual candlelight vigil on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the San Angelo Performing Arts Center. This vigil was in memory of the 211 deaths of men, women and children who died in 2018 due to domestic violence. “The shelter has been celebrating all month with different events including private ceremonies with victims as well as public events,” stated Valerie Tillery, Program Director for the Family Shelter.
The names of the victims were read aloud as a candle was placed on the stage in recognition of the individuals. There was also a performance of an interpretive dance by Madison Rea and Myka Flores. The vigil wrapped up the month-long celebration.
“These events are part of spreading awareness of domestic violence and the impact it has on our community and state,” stated Tillery. People feel that this type of violence is a private matter and they shouldn’t get involved. Tillery encourages everyone to reach out if they need help or if you know someone how is dealing with this issue help them reach out.

San Ángelo, Texas - El Refugio Familiar de San Ángelo el martes 29 de octubre de 2019 celebró su vigilia anual a la luz de las velas en el Centro de Artes Escénicas San Ángelo. Esta vigilia fue en memoria de las 211 muertes de hombres, mujeres y niños que murieron en 2018 debido a la violencia doméstica. Valerie Tillery, directora del programa para el Refugio Familiar declaró, "El refugio todo el mes ha estado celebrando con diferentes eventos, incluidas ceremonias privadas con las víctimas, así como eventos públicos".
Los nombres de las víctimas se leyeron en voz alta cuando se colocó una vela en el escenario en reconocimiento a las personas. También hubo una actuación de un baile interpretativo por Madison Rea y Myka Flores. La vigilia concluyó con un largo mes de celebraciones.
Tillery declaró, "Estos eventos son parte de la difusión de la conciencia sobre la violencia doméstica y el impacto que tiene en nuestra comunidad y estado".
