JUDGE: Lee Hamilton TRIAL PROSECUTORS: Assistant District Attorney Eric Oden and First Assistant District Attorney Richard Villarreal DEFENSE ATTORNEY: John Sutton VERDICT & PUNISHMENT: On April 2, 2024, a Tom Green County jury found George Dale Simmons guilty of possession of methamphetamine, 4-200 grams. On April 10, 2024, after hearing punishment evidence, including evidence of prior offenses, the judge imposed a prison sentence for Simmons of 50 years in prison.
CIRCUMSTANCES OF OFFENSE: On May 27, 2023, at approximately 9:00 P.M., the defendant’s vehicle came to the attention of a Tom Green County Sheriff’s Deputy for a defective stop lamp and defective license plate light. Upon running the defendant’s information through dispatch, the deputy learned that the defendant was driving while his license was suspended. After taking the defendant into custody, the deputy inventoried the vehicle. During that vehicle inventory, the deputy discovered what was later learned to be 5.77 grams of methamphetamine on the ground just outside the defendant’s driver’s side door. Evidence heard during trial showed that the defendant has a history of felony convictions spanning 25 years.
COMMENT FROM THE 119th DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE: We are thankful for the jury’s careful consideration of the evidence in this case. The punishment assessed by the court sends a clear message that our county will impose serious consequences on individuals who repeatedly violate the law and cause harm to our community.
