Justin Dela Cruz, Central High School senior, graduated with a 109.0 GPA while Natasha Flores’ GPA was a 106.6610. Both CHS graduates became the first Hispanics to be valedictorian and salutatorian in the history of the school.
SAN ANGELO – Justin Dela Cruz and Natasha Flores, Central High School seniors, gave their speeches like all the other past CHS valedictorians and salutatorians before them.
The one big difference at this year’s commencement ceremony held Saturday, May 29, 2021 was a historical one. Both Dela Cruz and Flores are the first Hispanics in the history of the school to deliver greetings and closing remarks in their respective titles.
What does it mean to be the first ever Hispanics at CHS as the valedictorian and salutatorian?
“We, as a people, are making great strides in the sports, arts, and academics of the world,” Dela Cruz said.
“It shows young Hispanics that they also can do it, regardless of their culture or background,” Flores said.
What do you want to say to your fellow graduates, faculty, family, and friends? “Central High School has made historical successes in a year of historical failures and suffering,” Dela Cruz said.
“We want to stress that while change was hard, we are stronger because of it,” Flores said.

Justin Dela Cruz, estudiante de último año de Central High School, se graduó con un GPA de 109.0, mientras que el GPA de Natasha Flores fue de 106.6610. Ambos graduados de CHS se convirtieron en los primeros hispanos en ser valedictorian y salutatorian en la historia de la escuela.
SAN ÁNGELO - Justin Dela Cruz y Natasha Flores, estudiantes de último año de Central High School, tomaron el podio como todos los demás valedictorian y salutatorian de Central High School que les precedieron en la historia de esta institución educativa.
La gran diferencia en la ceremonia de graduación de este año, celebrada el sábado 29 de mayo de 2021, fue histórica. Tanto Dela Cruz como Flores son los primeros hispanos en la historia de la escuela en encabezar dicho evento.
¿Qué significa ser el primer hispano en CHS como valedictorian y salutatorian?
“Nosotros, como pueblo, estamos logrando grandes avances en los deportes, las artes y la academia del mundo”, dijo Dela Cruz.
“Demuestra a los jóvenes hispanos que también pueden hacerlo, independientemente de su cultura o antecedentes”, dijo Flores.
¿Qué quieren decirles a sus compañeros graduados, profesores, familiares y amigos?
“Central High School ha tenido éxitos históricos en un año de fracasos y sufrimiento históricos”, dijo Dela Cruz.
“Queremos enfatizar que si bien el cambio fue difícil, somos más fuertes gracias a él”, dijo Flores.
