Lentz serves community, military, and their families

Conexión San Angelo newsroom, Jim Sánchez

Jan Lentz, Congressional Aide to Congressman, August Pfluger was honored for her public service to the people of the 11th District, also to military personnel and their families.

SAN ANGELO –Jan Lentz’ deep admiration and respect for the military men and women who sacrificed, and served our country stems from her own family’s military background. Lentz’ father, Claude William Lester, Jr. and grandfather, Claude William Lester, proudly served in the Army and Navy during World Wars I and World War II.

Service, an intrinsic trait Jan inherited from a legacy left by her military family, perfectly describes Lentz as both a Congressional Aide to Congressman, August Pfluger and to the military veterans she represents.

Lentz previously served at the Department of Veterans Affairs. At Lentz’ retirement party held in late February, Congressman Pfluger in his remarks stated she had “secured countless benefits for veterans and impacted thousands of veteran families.” One of those veterans she assisted was a former military pilot who served in Afghanistan. Lentz was able to get benefits for the pilot’s wife.

Jan is also a staunch supporter of veterans who deservedly should be recognized for laying down their lives on the battlefield. One of them was her neighbor, Mr. Hiroshi “Hershey “Miyamura. a United States Army Staff Sergeant and a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest miliary award for his heroic actions during the Korean War.

In 2019 the Poppy Project originated with Lentz, and 20 vets from her group as 1000 poppies were used as backdrops for a Memorial Day tribute that took place at Vietnam Veterans Memorial located at 8051-8091 Knickerbocker Rd. To honor Mr. Miyamura, Jan made sure to send him poppies. Miyamura passed away on November 29, 2022.

For background narrative on the history of the poppies,” a poem written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, titled “In Flanders Field” proclaims of soldiers buried on the battlefield, and to remember their sacrifices made with their very lives.
