Del Rio, Texas – Carlos Obrador Garrido, Mexican Consul of the Del Rio, Texas office recently spoke to Conexión about the influx of immigrants to Del Rio. “Our job as the consulate is to put everything in perspective. The majority of these immigrants are looking to reunite with their family. They have no interest in staying in this area,” commented Garrido.
“There have been rumors about the immigrants that have been released breaking into homes and causing problems and this is simply not true,” stated Garrido. When the immigrants are released, they have already been through an extensive background and identity check. These immigrants have not come in illegally, they have come here looking for asylum.
Garrido asked the community to contact the police department or sheriff’s office to verify the security of the city if they are concerned about a rumor they’ve heard or read about on social media.
Regarding the recent ICE raids, Garrido urges people to know their rights. La mayoría de estos inmigrantes buscan reunirse con su familia. No les interesa permanecer en esta área ", comentó Garrido.
"Ha habido rumores sobre los inmigrantes que fueron liberados irrumpiendo en los hogares y causando problemas y esto simplemente no es cierto", dijo Garrido. Cuando los inmigrantes son liberados, ya han pasado por un extenso proceso de verificación de antecedentes e identidad. Estos inmigrantes no han venido ilegalmente, han venido aquí buscando asilo.
Garrido le pidió a la comunidad que se comunique con el departamento de policía o la oficina del alguacil para verificar la seguridad de la ciudad si les preocupa un rumor que han escuchado o leído en las redes sociales.
Con respecto a las recientes redadas de ICE, Garrido exhorta a las personas a conocer sus derechos.
