Del Rio, Texas – On Thursday July 18th, 2019 the city of Del Rio, Texas hosted the 2019 State of the Border Address at the Civic Center. Raul Ortiz, Chief Agent of the Del Rio Sector led the address by thanking all the agencies that partner with the border patrol, including state, local and county government officials.
Ortiz began his career with the U.S. Border Patrol on May 13, 1991. He worked in various stations in the San Diego Sector. At one point he was a Patrol Agent in charge of the Del Rio Sector where he led several programs. Most recently he served as the Deputy Chief Patrol Agent of the Del Rio Sector and was promoted to Chief in April of 2014. “I grew up in Del Rio, so Being in command of my home sector means a lot,” commented Ortiz. He expressed his gratitude to his family because he has had to move them so much.
Ortiz touched on several subjects during the address. This included medical concerns within the community of the immigrants bringing in any sort of communicable disease. He assured that proper procedures were followed and people that needed medical attention were checked out at the hospital before being released. Supporting this humanitarian crisis requires the work of several agents. “We certainly try to monitor and see that our officers are not stretched too far,” commented Ortiz.
Family separations impacted the whole nation. “This sector was doing things as creatively as they could to make sure families were unified,” commented Ortiz. All the decisions that Border Patrol makes are with the children in mind.
The feeling of satisfaction comes when the community expresses that they are happy with the job that Border Patrol is doing. “It is important that we are invested, not just when we wear the uniform but when we take it off. It’s important for us to participate in civic organizations such as supporting youth groups, coaching and doing all the things in the community that good neighbors do. Since the day of my arrival tremendous the community has demonstrated tremendous support,” concluded Ortiz.

Aseguró que se siguieron los procedimientos correctos y que las personas que necesitaban atención médica fueron revisadas en el hospital antes de ser puestas en libertad. Apoyar esta crisis humanitaria requiere el trabajo de varios agentes. "Ciertamente, tratamos de monitorear y ver que nuestros oficiales no están demasiado estirados", comentó Ortiz.
Las separaciones familiares impactaron a toda la nación. "Este sector estaba haciendo las cosas de la manera más creativa posible para asegurarse de que las familias estuvieran unificadas", comentó Ortiz. Todas las decisiones que toma la Patrulla Fronteriza son con los niños en mente.
El sentimiento de satisfacción llega cuando la comunidad expresa que está contenta con el trabajo que está haciendo la Patrulla Fronteriza. “Es importante que invirtamos, no solo cuando usamos el uniforme sino también cuando nos lo quitamos. Es importante para nosotros participar en organizaciones cívicas como apoyar a grupos de jóvenes, entrenar y hacer todo lo que la comunidad hace con los vecinos. Desde el día de mi llegada, la comunidad ha demostrado un gran apoyo”, concluyó Ortiz.
