Del Rio, Texas – Alfredo Delgado was president and chief executive of the Del Rio Housing Authority for more than 31 years. During his time there he saw the importance of education. Del Rio was progressing well, there was a junior college but not a 4-year college.
Seeing the need for a more official university Delgado spoke with different organizations to try to get a plan together, including the Acuna Rotary club and the Educational Committee of the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce. When Delgado left the Housing Authority the plan went estray. Later he was approached about starting a committee again to continue the movement of bringing a university branch to the city that could possibly turn into an international university like the one in Laredo, TX. “The doors are open and it’s going to depend on certain individuals to keep this movement going and not lose the vision,” stated Delgado.
“I believe education is very important. My father used to push me to continue my education because without it things can be difficult,” commented Delgado. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Texas A&M University in Kingsville later a master’s degree in industrial psychology with an emphasis on administration.
When he attended A&M University he was married and had 2 children. The university hired him to work in the accounting department and registrar’s office and student activities. He later joined the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. Years later together with other alumni, he started a project to create a chapter of the fraternity. They submitted the application to the fraternity national office and became the first national chapter of the Phi Kappa Theta. This year they held their first gala in San Antonio.
In the future Delgado would like to see the 4-year college established and help the community bring more businesses to the city. “We can work together and see the future,” concluded Delgado.

Del Rio, Texas – Alfredo Delgado durante más de 31 años fue presidente y director ejecutivo de la Autoridad de Vivienda en Del Rio. Allí durante su periodo vio la importancia de la educación. Del Rio estaba progresando bien, había un colegio preparatorio, pero no una universidad de 4 años.
Al ver más la necesidad de una universidad oficial, Delgado habló con diferentes organizaciones para tratar de obtener un plan en conjunto, incluido el club rotario Acuna y el Comité de Educación de la Cámara de Comercio de Del Rio. Cuando Delgado dejó la Autoridad de Vivienda, el plan no se llevó acabo. Más tarde, se le acercó para iniciar nuevamente un comité para continuar el movimiento de traer una sucursal universitaria a la ciudad que podría convertirse en una universidad internacional como la de Laredo, TX. "Las puertas están abiertas y dependerá de que ciertas personas mantengan este movimiento y no pierdan la visión", declaró Delgado.
“Creo que la educación es muy importante. Mi padre solía insistirme para que continuara mi educación porque sin ella las cosas pueden ser difíciles ", comentó Delgado. El obtuvo una Licenciatura en Artes de la Universidad de Texas A&M en Kingsville y más tarde una maestría en psicología industrial con énfasis en administración.
Cuando asistió a la Universidad Texas A&I ya estaba casado y tenía 2 hijos. La universidad lo contrató para trabajar en el departamento de contabilidad y la oficina de registro y actividades estudiantiles. Más tarde se unió a la fraternidad Phi Kappa Theta. Años más tarde, junto con otros alumnos, comenzó un proyecto para crear un capítulo de la fraternidad. Presentaron una solicitud a la oficina nacional de la fraternidad y se convirtieron en el primer capítulo nacional de Phi Kappa Theta. Este año celebraron su primera gala en San Antonio.
En el futuro, a Delgado le gustaría ver la universidad de 4 años establecida y ayudar a la comunidad a traer más negocios a la ciudad. "Podemos trabajar juntos y ver el futuro", concluyó Delgado.
