The Saturday, May 4, 2024 San Angelo Police Chief general election race resulted in a June 15 runoff between Lt. Mike Hernandez, and Sgt. Travis Griffith.
SAN ANGELO – In the Saturday, May 4, 2024 General Election race for the San Angelo Police Chief position, candidate Sgt. Travis Griffith made a surge to finish strong and force a June 15 runoff with the other candidate, who was leading at the time, Lt. Mike Hernandez. The third candidate was Lt. Christopher Cimino.
Although Lt. Hernandez’ 49.52% led Sgt. Griffith’s 46.51% with Lt. Cimino at 3.79%, neither of the two picked up the necessary 50% plus one vote to win the Police Chief position outright.
Heading into Saturday’s election day, Hernandez combined absentee and early voting total of 2,159 led Griffith’s 1,712, while Cimino came in with 165 votes.
On election day is where Griffith’s voters, 1,368 made the late surge and difference to cut into Hernandez lead, of 1, 120 who voted for him.

Lt. Hernandez’ total votes edged out Sgt. Griffith by a 199-vote margin. However, Lt. Cimino’s 263 votes affected the outcome by taking away from Hernandez, and Griffth’s chances of winning outright.
In the Wall ISD School Board of Trustees race, Houston Guy and Doug Wilde will be the two new members sworn in.
