HOSA Members Advance to State Competition The Health Occupation Students of America Organization Del Rio chapter was granted the opportunity to compete in a virtual conference on January 20th, 2021. A variety of students within this national organization were eligible to compete against one another in all categories medicine related. A total of eight HOSA student members volunteered themselves to take part in this competition. Students represented our Del Rio chapter in categories such as: Medical Spelling, Medical Terminology, Nursing Assistant, CPR/First Aid, EMT, and Extemporaneous Writing. This competition consisted of timed exams over topics in which students had been in preparation for since August. The participants said that they were confident and proud of their work despite the outcome. Good spirits were withheld the entire journey by HOSA members that were either there supporting or competing. For many it was a once in a lifetime opportunity that granted a new experience and allowed for a gain of knowledge. Following the release of results, state competition was scheduled March 8th, 2021, three of our members qualified for the state competition. The following three members placed within the top 5 in their category. In Emergency Medical Technician: Annalisa Ortiz and Brandon Galvan placed 2nd. In Extemporaneous Writing: Trinity Martinez placed 2nd . The members of our HOSA organization have represented us well and truly we could not be more proud of their accomplishments. This unique experience has reaped rewards of encouragement to conquer what is ahead. The medical field is a challenging journey that will pay off at the end of each strenuous path. Always remember, “If it doesn’t challenge you then it won’t change you!”
