While utopia may be a bit of a stretch when describing Hacienda Maria at Native American Seed, it comes pretty close. On May 9, 2022, the Migrant Education Program had an incredible opportunity, along with Conexión, to visit the farm and sit and speak with the founder. Bill Neiman and his daughter Emily Neiman embody empathy and all we want to see in a relationship between employer and employee. Our program was blessed with the opportunity to get to know them better and understand how they implemented H2A workers and their families into their business and built a successful enterprise and an incredible community of support.
The Migrant Education Program is a part of the Education Service Center Region 15. It works with migrant agricultural workers and their children to ensure their students can maintain their studies while traveling with their families following seasonal work. Some of these workers are brought in by farmers and ranchers through H2A visas. This month, Emily and Mr. Neiman joined our Cafe Con Las Comadres meeting and enlightened us on how H2A workers have helped at their farm. Not only did they bring in the workers, but they also went a step further. Understanding the importance of family to his workers, Bill invited their families to join them. In doing so, they saw a difference in the morale of their employees. They became the village it takes to raise children, and their workers were able to focus better on their agricultural work, knowing their families were close by. Mr. Neiman reminded us that agricultural work is one of the most dangerous and requires concentration. After arriving, the families were introduced to the MEP through the school migrant liaison in Junction, who informed the program that there were migrant students in their area.
Three years later, an incredible relationship is forming between families, employers, and the MEP. While sitting with Mr. Neiman, I am impressed with the fact that he knows what the students are doing. He has stressed to his employees the importance of their roles as parents in their children’s education. Believe me when I say, we saw the example he set for his daughter, who is just as involved with the students, even playing bus driver this year for them. He encourages them to attend school functions and accompanies them. They have even assisted one of the students with her entrepreneurial endeavors, helping shape future business leaders. Native American Seed and the Neimans have proven that opening up hearts and minds, working with the community, school, and available programs, and learning from different backgrounds will help the business and community bloom and grow and ensure the future successes of our migrant students.
