SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – United Way of the Concho Valley is excited to announce the annual "United We Read" event, which will take place on Wednesday, November 8th. This initiative, made possible by the generous sponsorship of the San Angelo Health Foundation, aims to raise awareness about the critical importance of reading to and with children while supporting United Way's mission of ensuring grade-level reading by third grade. Thanks to the invaluable support of the San Angelo Health Foundation, more than 1,900 second graders from 20 schools across the 14 counties of the Concho Valley will receive their very own copy of “Be You” by Peter H. Reynolds. Additionally, they will be provided with craft materials to create their self-portraits and bookmarks. Dedicated volunteers from local communities will read the book aloud to students and assist them in the creative process.
Participating schools include Ballinger ISD, Brady ISD, Bronte ISD, Christoval ISD, Crockett County CCSD, Eden CISD, Grape Creek ISD, Great Beginnings Academy, Irion County ISD, Lohn ISD, Mason ISD, Menard ISD, Paint Rock ISD, Robert Lee ISD, San Angelo ISD, Sonora ISD, TLCA-San Angelo, Veribest ISD, Wall ISD, and Winters ISD.
"United We Read is one of our favorite events at United Way. This marks our fourth year, and the impact Providing each student with a brand new book and craft not only makes for an incredible day but also leaves a lasting impression on the students and their families. We initiated United We Read to emphasize the importance of literacy and reading to and with children, and having local volunteers read to the students adds a special touch. We are thrilled about the future of United We Read and the positive impact it will make in the years to come," said Ashley Ammons, President/CEO at United Way of the Concho Valley.
