Help businesses in times of pandemic

San Angelo, Texas – For the past 20 years, the Concho Valley Economic Development District, Inc., has helped businesses receive loans for development and sustainability.

Albert Rodríguez is regional executive director of the loan program of that organization, which is part of the Council of Governments in the Concho Valley.

The Concho Valley Council of Governments is a voluntary organization of local governments to foster a cooperative effort in solving problems, policies and plans that are common and regional.

“The district serves 13 counties with planning, grant seeking, grant writing, business development and technical assistance,” said Mr. Rodríguez. "And now that businesses are not working 100 percent, due to the Coronavirus, help is much more important."

Rodríguez said the agency has received $ 500,000 from the government to assist businesses that need to stay afloat. With that contribution, the agency already has $ 950,000, thanks to what the State has provided to support both Tom Green County and the rest of 13 counties that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and that can receive help to recover in their business.

"Some restaurants operate at 25 percent, others are closed, the situation is difficult," said Rodríguez. "We try to lend about $ 20,000 dollars per business, so that it at an interest rate of 4%."

Rodríguez said that his work is free, the organization he represents does all the work of applying for the loan.

“It doesn't cost you anything, and if you don't get the loan, the only thing you lost is your time,” Rodríguez said. “But the money is available for businesses to use. If the funds are not used, we have to return them, and we do not want to do that”.
